Day Seventeen

The Buck(eye) starts here…

In theory, it was just a small hop from Lexington to Columbus today, a mere 3 ½ hrs roadtrip to be exact. The closer we got to Columbus, the more antsy we, alright, I, got. We have a certain checklist of things we would like to see of Columbus and OSU, i.e. a few things we want to see/have if we should move here. First things first: Columbus has a decent Country radio station. Check. Columbus has a VERY decent Rock station, i.e. they play the old-school, harder Metallica stuff during daylight already, as in 3 in the afternoon. CHECK CHECK CHECK! What was interesting to notice that, 20 minutes and about 12 miles outside of Columbus Central, i.e. Downtown Metropolitan Area, there was…nothing. Well, a few (and by few I mean less than four) farms scattered around left and right off the Interstate…other than that…zippety squat… nada…So that’s a plus, too. We don’t want to live in a sprawl, i.e. the next escape where you have room to breathe being lightyears away…so definite CHECK on that one. As for OSU…

It’s…wow. We are looking for a kind of campus-in-itself, like JMU for example. JMU is a city of all by itself. Campus police, the works, there are no ‚civilian’ buildings intermingling with College ones, anything and everything is JMU related, which makes for a nice community feeling kinda. We drove through a few other … campuses? Campi? And they were…well…let’s just say we didn’t enjoy the colleges in Philadelphia and Baltimore as much. OSU though? Is like JMU on steroids. It’s HUGE, a campus like JMU, just bigger. Where JMU has 20k students these days, OSU has 50k undergraduates alone and another 12k graduate and professional students. Half a dozen bookstores and…it’s just…wow. Where JMU believes in bluestone, OSU believes in brick and sandstone, pulling off a dignified, historic look. Very, very nice. The landscaping itself is on par as well…and where the future version of JMU’s stadium will seat 50k, the OSU horseshoe seats 102k. It’s….wow. I *SO* will be there to attend home games….I’ve seen pictures….

GO BUCKEYES!

We then circled Columbus a bit on the belway, liking what we saw in the North-West, Dublin and Upper Arlington Area…we found a rather spiffy looking, huge mall and snatched two apartment and townhouse rental catalogues to give us an idea of the market. Doesn’t sound too bad yet, price-wise…we’ll see. Tomorrow, we’ll explore the campus by foot, it will be fun. Right now though, relaxing at the Days Inn. Five sunbursts, huge, comfy room, kingsize bed…and a total steal at 47 dollars a night. It’s the best place we stayed at until now out of all Days Inns, even better than the one in Cherry Hill we thought unbeatable…and the price is just wow. I can’t help but snicker at the thought of what 47 dollars a night would buy you in Germany….let’s rather NOT go there…

Anyhow…Greetings from the Buckeye State, Birthplace of Aviation. Future home of us? Possibly. Right now? We like what we see. A lot. More news tomorrow.
